The Italian data protection body expressed privacy worries about the model, which was developed by the American start-up OpenAI and is supported by Microsoft. The agency stated that it will prohibit and probe OpenAI "with immediate effect."
ChatGPT has been utilized by millions of people since its inception in November 2022. It can respond to inquiries in natural, human-like English, and it can also replicate different writing styles, utilizing the internet as it was in 2021 as its database.
Microsoft has invested billions of dollars on it, and it was introduced to Bing last month. It has also stated that a version of the technology will be included in Microsoft Office programs, namely Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Concerns have been raised about the possible hazards of artificial intelligence (AI), including job loss and the spread of disinformation and prejudice. The Italian data protection authority stated that it would not only prohibit OpenAI's chatbot, but would also examine whether it complies with the General Data Protection Regulation.
On March 20, the watchdog said that the app had suffered a data breach affecting user interactions and payment information. The Italian data-protection authorities said OpenAI has 20 days to respond to the watchdog's concerns or face a punishment of €1.2 billion ($21.7 million) or up to 4% of annual profits.
